Often misspelt, the word & form of martial arts – Taekwondo, also spelled Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do, is a Korean martial art that focuses on high, fast kicks and jumping and spinning kicks. The term “Taekwondo” is derived from three Korean words:
- Tae (태) meaning “foot” or “to step on”
- Kwon (권) meaning “fist” or “fight”
- Do (도) meaning “the way” or “discipline”
Thus, Taekwon-do can be translated as “the way of the foot and fist.” The art was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists who combined elements of Karate and Chinese martial arts with traditional Korean martial arts practices.
